Broadcast Journalism Law/Ethics

1. What are the 5 freedoms of the 1st amendment?
freedom of speech, religion, press, assemble, petition.
2. What is the Tinker Standard?
student speech cannot be censored as long as it does not "materially disrupt class work or involve substantial disorder or invasion of the rights of others."
(it can't disrupt class!)
3. What is the Frasier Standard?
(Vulgar or indecent!)

4. What is the Hazelwood Standard?
(has to be reasonably related to legitimate teaching concerns)

5. What is the Frederick Standard?
(Schools cannot censor students actions and speech outside of school)

6. What is the definition of libel?
A false statement of face about someone, Must actually harm the reputation of another person.
Must be:
1. A defamatory statement
2. Published to at least one other person (other than the plaintiff)
3. "of and concerning" the plaintiff
4. Know that is a false statement
