NOTES ON NEWS

Define “Broadcast Journalism” in 1-3 sentences.
Broadcast-televised, radio, Internet, to air instantaneously. Journalism-current events, new casts, the reporting of current events.




List and describe the six criteria of newsworthiness.
TITLE DESCRIPTION EXAMPLE
1. Unusualness- News is different, the unusual, the out of the ordinary, unusual is more often found in bad news. (church roof collapses, airplane lands in Hudson river..)

2. Significant- Important events, ones that affect many people, are news. (taxes, elections, wars, economy...)

3. Timeliness- Old news is NOT news: its history! (people want to hear about the flood thats happening, not from last month..)

4. Proximity- People want to know about NEARBY events: (local apartment fire...)

5. Prominance- When well-known people, buildings, or places are involved, that is news. (famous people getting in trouble...)


6. Human Interest- Stories about ordinary people or animals, humorous or dramatic. Heartwarming or hear-wrenching stories.
